What mattress is best for an aching back?

Posted on Jan 14, 2014

Lower back pain, middle back pain, upper back pain or low back pain with sciatica. Nerve and muscular problems, degenerative disc disease, and arthritis -- all can leave you tossing and turning throughout the night. Sometimes, back pain symptoms may be relived with medication or pain killers, but often your mattress is to blame.  If your mattress is visibly sagging or you wake up more nights complaining of aches and pains than not, updating your mattress could be an easy fix.

Since our owner Aaron has been dealing with a herniated disk, we've discovered that the mattress you sleep on every night is crucial for back pain relief.  But what mattress is best for an aching back? Contrary to popular belief a firmer mattress may not be best choice.  According to Spine-Health.com, "Sleeping on a mattress that is too firm can cause aches and pains on pressure points. A medium-firm mattress may be more comfortable because it allows the shoulder and hips to sink in slightly. Patients who want a firmer mattress for back support can get one with thicker padding for greater comfort."

It's important to find a mattress that allows support of the natural curves of the spine while also providing comfort.  Only you know what works best for you.  There's no one mattress that is the solution to all back problems. Stop by our showroom and take a few of the newest mattress technologies for a test drive!  We'll make sure you go home sleeping better tonight!
